Disadvantages of Internet Payment Gateways

The principal disadvantage of internet payment gateways and developing a system in-house is cost. In the last decade several non IT companies have tried to create, from zero, systems of their own. Unfortunately, almost all of them have been unsuccessful. Why? Because it wasn't their core business. They had to use personal and resources from inside the company who had little or no experience in that kind of undertakings. This is the reason why companies that are specifically dedicated to develop invoice systems don't recommend companies to create them.

The main example is operating systems and office suites. Almost no company creates a Microsoft Office or Open Office of their own, and something as complicated as an operating systems like Windows or Linux is not even thought about.

Remember that developing is only a part of the cost. After that you need to implement the software and give it support. That means a whole department of people dedicated to it. Because of economies of scale, it would be cheaper to give this operation to a third party that has become extremely efficient and could charge you an easy to pay monthly quota.

So, what do you do? Are you willing to sacrifice the security and resources of your company by developing a system in house? On the other hand, you prefer to lower costs, maintain your client's privacy but loose a bit of corporate image? It isn't an easy decision, but think. Is your company an IT business? If it is, it is most probable that you have people that have worked in this. Ask them for their experience. Maybe they can give you a couple of tips that can help you implement your own system.

But, if your business is non IT, forget it and concentrate on your core business. It's almost assured that the ecommerce payment gateway won't work or even worse, go over budget. How can you explain to your boss or shareholders that you paid for an unfinished, broken and resource consuming software that your could have bought outside for a fraction of the price? The truth is that you won't be able to do it. An internet payment gateway is not an easy task, so don't get carried away by some opinion. Inform yourself first.
