Ways Of Tackling The Phishing Threat In Transaction Processing

Because phishing is rampant over the Internet nowadays, severe actions are undertaken against it. Phishing filters are created to counteract phishing websites. But what is a phishing filter and what are phishing websites anyway? Before answers to these questions are given, phishing has to be fully first explained. Phishing is the act of fraudulently acquiring another person's financial information by sending out phony emails, messages and through masquerading. Phishing is illegal, because through it, the many cases of identity theft come about.

What is email phishing?

Email phishing is the strategy of deceitful individuals to send out mass emails to random addresses informing recipient that their personal data is compromised. Most of the time, they pull it off by showing to their victims that they have the power and the ability to access these types of information. They may even use government seals, company logos, or the names of big financial institution to feign authority.

What is a phishing website?

A phishing website is the place where the phishing email directs a user to input the necessary information. It is where a person actually types what is being asked of him. And that could even include the password he uses to access his credit card or bank account. This is a bogus website and serves no purpose other than to extract information from its willing victims.

What is a phishing filter?

A phishing filter is an add-in program developed for the MSN search toolbar. It is made by no other than the software giant, Microsoft. The job of the phishing filter is to scan the website a person visits and to warn him once it detects something suspicious about it. It also has the capability to check the website's accuracy by accessing a real-time online information system.

The Ways Devised to Combat Phishing

To eradicate phishing, several methods are developed. These are:
  1. The development of anti-phishing programs
    Anti-virus and anti-spyware program providers themselves developed tools that effectively stop these fraudulent activities. Private software companies also create their own versions of a security product to prevent phishing. The creation of phishing filter falls under this category.
  2. Information dissemination to Internet users
    Phishing is best opposed when all people are informed of how it works and how it can affects them. By keeping people up to date, all anti-phishing efforts are not wasted. Instead, they are enhanced even more. All Internet users, especially those who transact financial businesses online should understand all types of phishing strategies so as to be guided in their actions and employ strict security measures.
