Looksoftware Takes Transaction Processing Offline

The Australian company, looksoftware, has announced it's Version 8 rollout. The Version 8 rollout has many new and enhanced products, including Offline Support for smartclient. Offline Support allows OS/400 transaction processing to be done offline. Their new Offline Support will make it possible for core System I applications to be used even when there is no host connection available. It will be particularly useful for people like salespeople, who can work with an OS/400 application from a browser interface, even when the connection to the server is not present.

To add the Offline Support to the System I application does not need any change to the application. The new Offline Support can support different functions, including local caching, business logica and web services. The Version 8 records a host transaction using a transaction recorder. Then the recording can be used by remote workers offline. A number of offline transactions may be recorded and playbacked later when there is a co nnection to the host application available.

Marcus Dee, from looksoftware, says the company is focusing on "improving the potential for reuse of existing System I investments". He says the Offline Support is a good example of "non-invasive enrichment of core System I applications to support new technologies".

Offline Support should be available late in 2006, when it is released as part of the Version 8 rollout for looksoftware. It will be delivered as part of a new release of smartclient. Smartclient is a premium rich client offering, which utilizes Microsoft's latest controls and interface technology. The first Version 8 products to be released were lookdirect and liteclient. Lookdirect eliminates 5250 OLTP costs when modernizing System I applications with looksoftware, by taking advantage of POWER5 System i% technology. Liteclient has a subset of looksoftware's premium smartclient features, and offers a low-cost, rich client package.

Looksoftware sells a software suite that m odernizes OS/400 andz/OS applications. It has new interfaces and different ways of intergrating with other systems. The development and deployment tools are sold as part of looksoftware's "Dynamic Environment".
